Glue Laminated Timber Structure Case Study
Deterioration of structural timbers
Bristol City Centre, Sail Structure. Client: Bristol City Council

Exposure Surveying Ltd were commissioned to undertake a timber condition assessment of this 25 metre high glue laminated structure, with instructions to evaluate the level of deterioration since its last inspection.
The structure was inspected from a lorry mounted platform, which gave adequate access to all the components.
We used non-destructive Ultrasonic instrumentation to assess the sub-surface condition of timber components and a microdrill to quantify the extent of decay when found.
With the microdrill, even the timbers encased in the metal connectors could be assessed. The microdrill located extensive decay in this detailing.
We regularly communicated our findings to the Councils structural engineer, who quickly made arrangements for the structure to be dismantled once we quantified the true sub-surface condition of the timbers.
The site was cordoned-off and the structure was dismantled the very next day.
It was a shame to see such an iconic structure decommissioned but this case study illustrates the importance of regularly inspecting timber structures.
Exposure Surveying Ltd continue to be entrusted with undertaking condition assessments of the most prestigious glulam structures in the U.K
