Benjamin & Beauchamp Architects Ltd
About the company
b2 architects are a Somerset based architect and historic building consultancy with a wealth of experience of new build and conservation projects.
Our projects
The Walronds is a large 17th century mansion house in the centre of the Mid Devon market town of Cullompton.
The Cullompton Walronds Preservation Trust having received funding from English Heritage, Mid Devon District Council and the Heritage Lottery Fund, commissioned specialist condition reports in preparation for making further applications for funding to repair and conserve the building.
This is one of the largest conservation projects in the South West of England.
Benjamin & Beauchamp requirements
The instruction was to provide a condition assessment of all timbers embedded in masonry.
Exposure Surveying solutions
Exposure Surveying assessed the sub-surface condition of timbers using microdrill instrumentation and provided a detailed report describing the condition of the 150 elements tested.
The business benefits
The extensive investigation produced data that was used to prepare the schedule of repairs.
Exposure Surveying’s strategic and sympathetic assessment of timbers, many behind decorative plasterwork, was minimally invasive and ensured the conservation of historic materials.
Architects comments
A thorough and systematic testing of concealed timberwork behind historically important finishes allowed a detailed scheme of repairs to be developed. The investigation ensured that historic plasterwork and joinery remains as undisturbed as possible.
