Damp Defect Investigation
We can be contacted to undertake independent surveys of the causes of dampness in buildings.
We routinely undertake damp investigations throughout the U.K in historic and more recently constructed buildings.
Signs of Damp
You may be witnessing the symptoms of damp related defects on plasterwork and other decorative surfaces. These are some of the effects of dampness and could include, dark patches of staining and salt deposits on plasterwork, black moulds in the corners of walls and ceilings, flaking paint on decaying joinery items. These defects could have been caused by one or more of the following conditions, rising damp, penetrating dampness, condensation, below ground and site specific sources of moisture.
It is essential that the causes of these defects are thoroughly understood and investigated before an informed diagnosis can be made.
Diagnosing Damp
It may be necessary to undertake moisture profiling, mortar sampling or salt analysis in order to be able to make a successful diagnosis of the causes of defects. However, no matter what equipment is used during the investigation, it is all inclusive in the pre-agreed fee.
Only after a successful diagnosis can recommendations be made to resolve the problems.
Resolving Damp Problems
Our recommendations follow conservation minded guidelines and advice promoted by The Society For The Protection Of Ancient Buildings (SPAB), the Building Research Establishment (BRE) and other learned bodies.
To resolve damp related defects we recommend holistic environmental improvements to the building and promote the use of traditional breathable materials. We do not recommend chemical injection damp proof courses or other chemical 'cures'.
Usually, the kind of modifications that we recommend could be undertaken by your local builder or a competent DIY enthusiast.
Our Methodology
We charge a competitive fee for the investigation, a detailed report and can liaise with other building professionals as necessary.
Our clients include architects, engineers, private homeowners, local authorities and conservation professionals.
Note: Some companies offer separate damp and timber surveys, this is not advisable as it is essential to undertake an assessment of 'at risk' timbers as part of any damp investigation.
