Bristol City Landmark
Written on Monday 19th of October 2009
We have just finished a timber condition assessment of a glue-laminated structure for Bristol City Council. We used ultrasonic decay detection instrumentation and other non-destructive testing equipment to assess the condition of the structure.
The equipment detected extensive sub-surface decay and as a consequence, the 25 metre high structure was decommissioned. It was amazing to see the speed of events unfold once we had notified the City Councils structural engineer of our discovery. The city centre site was cordoned off immediately and the structure dismantled the very next day.
It was sad to see the structure dismantled, we had inspected it before and although I am used to working at height, undertaking rope access surveys, I will miss bobbing about in the cradle of the cherrypicker, high above bristol.
