Dry rot (Serpula lacrymans)
We specialise in the scientific assessments and environmental control of dry rot outbreaks and other damp related building defects
Our principles
Unlike chemical treatment companies, we are building conservation professionals and practise the philosophy of minimal intervention. We focus on controlling decay by realigning environmental imbalances and implementing repair strategies that embrace conservation principles. This holistic approach addresses the causes and correction of the defect, it is scientific and totally effective.
Assessments
To minimise disruption, we carry out non-destructive surveys, assessing sub-surface decay in timber components using ultrasound decay detection and microdrill instrumentation.
Our assessments and recommendations follow conservation principles and informed guidelines published by English Heritage, Society for the Protection of Ancient Buildings (SPAB), Building Research Establishment (BRE) and other learned bodies.
Environmental Controls
We provide cost-effective solutions for eradicating dry rot without a reliance on chemical timber preservatives.
Essentially, dry timber does not decay, so we can eradicate dry rot permanently by rectifying the building defects that allowed the dry rot to flourish before employing specialist drying techniques that realign the environmental imbalance.
There are occasions when the use of chemical preservatives is justified but, this should be in a targeted way, never precautionary or wholesale.
